Quite the BUZZ these days on ADUs

Lets chat about the details…

Thinking about adding an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to your property in San Diego? Whether you’re looking to create a rental unit, a home for family, or boost your property value, ADUs are a smart and increasingly popular option. San Diego is one of the most ADU-friendly cities in California — but there are still important rules and opportunities to be aware of.

I say this often but an Additional Dwelling Unit is a self-contained living unit that shares the same lot as a main residence. A bathroom, kitchen, and a heat source. ADUs go by many names: granny flats, in-law units, backyard homes — but they all serve the same purpose.

In San Diego, ADUs can take a few different forms:

  • Detached ADU: A free-standing structure (like a small house in the backyard)

  • Attached ADU: An extension connected to the main home

  • Conversion ADU: Transformed from an existing space, like a garage or basement

  • Junior ADU (JADU): A smaller unit (up to 500 sq ft) located within the main home

As always I hope this is helpful. Please reach out with any questions.
